The Turkish government is going to sell vegetables to keep the excessively rising prices under control. Inflation of food prices hasn’t been as high as it is now since 2004, according to Bloomberg. Aubergines are 81% more expensive, cucumbers 53% and tomatoes 39%.
According to Turkish president Erdoğan, various wholesalers are the cause of the problem. The Turkish leader calls the current situation food terrorism, and he thinks the vegetables are needlessly expensive. He has made it known fines are soon to follow.
To handle the problem, the government now buys the vegetables from the growers and sells them at cost price in Ankara and Istanbul.
