Two rare specimens of durian fruit have been sold in Indonesia for 14 million rupiah each (875 euros). "The buyer did not want to be identified, but he was a Durian lover," supermarket manager Heriawan Teten told the AFP news agency on Wednesday. The two fruits were not the usual oblong durians that are available for a few euros, but rather rare round "J-Queens".
The spiky fruit balls were exhibited on velvet cushions in a display case in a supermarket in the city of Tasikmalaya in the Indonesian province of West Java, decorated with artificial flowers. The price is equivalent to about eight times the local monthly minimum wage.Known as the "Queen of Fruits", the Durian enjoys great popularity throughout Southeast Asia. Lovers praise them for their creamy consistency - others compare their intense odor with that of sewage or unwashed socks.
