Good season for Cipolla Bianca di Margherita IGP despite the bad weather

"We have been taking part in Fruit Logistica for many years. Our stand will try to convey the characteristics of the territory where Pgi onions grow and the relevant manual production techniques," explains Giuseppe Castiglione, president of Consorzio della Cipolla Bianca di Margherita IGP who will attend Fruit Logistca on 6th-8th February 2019 (Hall 4.2, Stand 01 - Puglia pavilion).

The consortium will have the opportunity to strengthen its position with sector operators as well as with Italian and foreign retailers.

Packaging operators and producers who invested a lot on the PGI mark to promote their excellent product will also be available at the stand dedicated to white onions.

"To promote the unique organoleptic qualities of our product, we will set up an area to savor onion-based dishes prepared by a renowned chef from Puglia."

"Sales in 2018 went well. Volumes were the same of the previous year, but the value was higher because the average production price had more weight than in the previous year. The rain between April and mid-May reduced the yield of saleable certified produce. Luckily things picked up between the second half of May 2018 until harvesting was over in early July. Expectations for 2019 are excellent."

Cipolla Bianca di Margherita Igp are produced in the sand of the Adriatic Sea south of the Gargano area. The land is protected by an international convention (Ramsar 1979) between Margherita di Savoia (Bat), Zapponeta (Fg) and Manfredonia (Fg). The consortium was recognised in 2016 and it gathers small producers, two cooperatives and four packaging companies.
