European potato market (week 5)

France: serious competition between factories and processing plants

Belgium
Fiwap/PCA market message:

Industrial varieties: fewer transactions observed than in recent weeks; the offer tends to shrink, faced with a strong demand, and markets are firming up.

Fontane: 30.00 to 32.50 €/q; firm market, with most practiced price at 30.00 €/q;

Challenger: 30.00 to 32.50 €/q; firm market, with most common price at 30.00 €/q;

Bintje: firm market: “friable quality”: max 15 % floating at 1060 g/l and PSE min 335g/5kg: 27.50 to 31.00 €/q depending on the quality (PSE, cooking…), the caliber and the buyer. Highest prices for the nice regular lots of (very) good quality, mainly for fresh fries.

European physical markets

Price summary (source: NEPG):

Bintje plant: Dutch plant, class A, returned March 2019, by 5 tons, in bags, hTVA: firm markets and prices are up again and progressing (inquire very regularly):

Caliber 28-35 mm: 115.00-120.00 €/q

Caliber 35–45 mm: 85.00-90.00 €/q

Forward market

EEX in Leipzig (€/q) Bintje, Agria and var. related for conversion, 40 mm+, min 60% 50 mm +:

Netherlands
Markets still very tense and prices remain firm for most categories. In this context, the offer is very narrow. The Dutch factories are better covered by their contracts than their Belgian counterparts (by the “meeleveraardappelen” system), so they are not strongly affected by the recent rise in prices. However, it is becoming clear that the free volumes are very rare, and that those “meeleveraardappelen” must eventually be paid for at the right price. The actual transactions are 30.00 €/q for the basic fries varieties, Innovator at 31.00 €/q, Agria at 33.00 - 34.00 €/q for the February delivery. Very little activity in distant export.

France
Industry: markets still firm and unchanged prices, on the basis of 30.00 €/q for basic industrial varieties, and 27.50 €/q for dual-use varieties. On specific outlets, prices can exceed 30.00 €/q, for friable quality of household fries for export in big-bags. The fresh markets (domestic and export) are rather high with regular volumes (Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal…). The industry pushes prices upward, and we see some serious competition between factories and processing plants...There is a demand for red-skinned varieties in the East. Prices on the fresh market go from 26 to 35 €/q, the basic quality (for Eastern countries in particular) being at 26 - 28 €/q (big-bag caliber), and the superior quality (Agata top-washable) exceeds 35 €/q. The firm flesh on the domestic market are negotiated at 35 to 45 €/q depending on variety/quality.

Industrial activity (source: GIPT via UNPT): French factories worked 625,000 tons from July to December 2018, a 8% increase (45,000 tons) compared to 2017.

Unwashed industrial potato, bulk, departure, hTVA, Nord Seine, €/qt, min–max (moy) (RNM):

Potatoes for industry (fries), firm prices and slight increase! Agria between 31.00 and 32.00 €/q, Fontane between 30.50 and 31.50 €/q, Innovator between 32.00 and 33.00 €/q.
