Carrefour Turkey donated 500 tons of products

CarrefourSA, a joint venture of Sabanci Holding and Carrefour, collaborated with Basic Needs Foundation (TIDER) in a project. CarrefourSA General Manager Kutay Kartallioglu said: "We reached 20,000  people in need with a donation of 500 tons of products and we stopped 270 tons of carbon emissions."

Speaking in the press conference, Kartallioglu pointed out the scale of wasted food around the world. He stated that CarrefourSA and TIDER started to collaborate in 2012 and in 2015 they launched the system called "Support Market"; a chain of markets where people in need can get products approaching their expiration dates.

"We prevented 500 tons of food waste. These products are not expired, all can still be consumed. We talk about products that cannot stay on the shelves due to damaged packaging and so on. 20 thousand people in need received these. This project worked successfully in many cities including Ankara, Bolu, Eskisehir, Izmir, Bursa and Adana. 22 centers received donations from CarrefourSA which made the project a success." said General Manager Kartallioglu.

Serhan Suzer, entrepreneur and Founder of Basic Needs Foundation (TIDER) said that 1,3 billion tons of food is wasted around the world and this equates to four times the need of people in extreme poverty. Suzer said that in Turkey mostly vegetables, fruits and bread are wasted. He added that there are 13 million people in Turkey who cannot get enough nutrition and people who live under the poverty line make up 14% of the population.
