Culture Pom: “We want to change our image as Agata specialists”

Culture Pom offers all varieties of French potatoes on the Italian market. The company has specialized itself in the marketing of French potatoes in 15 European countries. Italy is one of its main markets. But this year, Culture Pom wants to diversify the range of potatoes it offers in Italy. “We want to change our image as sellers of Agata in order to eventually approach packers who work with other varieties,” explains Laura Bosquet, export commercial representative France-Italy.

The Agata potato is doing very well on the Italian market. “Our goal for this year is to show that we are able to work many other varieties,” reveals Laura. “The Manitou and Mozart potatoes, for example, are two varieties that could interest the Italians, especially in the north of the country,”

A complex Italian market
The situation on the Italian market is complicated. Laura explains that the Italians generally buy at lower prices than the Spanish. “The purchasing power in Italy is weaker. Besides, the contracts between the packers and the Italian supermarkets do not allow them to buy at a higher price. Adding up to the cost of purchase are the costs of transportation and packaging. If the potatoes are too expensive, the packers cannot make profit anymore. Luckily, we still manage to compromise with the packers, with whom we work on a regular basis.” Compared to Spain, Italy gets much more supplies from Germany given its geographical location, but Culture Pom remains on the markets nevertheless with its quality potatoes.

In 2018, Culture Pom sold 90,000 tons of potatoes, which is 10,000 tons more than in 2017. The potatoes are produced by more than 120 producers from all potato production areas in France. The company works exclusively on the fresh market, sells a wide range of varieties and exports primarily in big-bags.

Attendance at Fruit Logistica
Culture Pom will be present at the Fruit Logistica fair in Berlin: Hall 22, Stand F-03. The Italian packers will be welcome at the booth. Laura, who speaks fluent Italian, will also be there.
