Colombia: 100 tons of Hass avocados for the US Super Bowl

Colombia sent nearly 100 tons of Hass avocado to the US for the Super Bowl 2019, the greatest sporting event in the United States and the day when people in that country eat the most avocados.

This shipment was the result of the work done by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), growers, and guilds.

Colombia is the fourth biggest producer of Hass avocado, and the Government's goal is to have a much bigger participation in 2020. The United States accounts for a third of the global purchases of Hass avocados, with nearly $2 billion each year.

Colombia also exports Hass avocado to Germany, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Spain, United States, France, Holland, England, Italy, Panama, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Tunisia. In addition, it recently achieved the opening of the Argentine market.

Deyanira Barrero Leon, the general manager of ICA, stated that there were currently 13 production centers of Hass avocado in seven departments of the country and that the goal was to have 90 cores, consisting of farms with buffer areas, in 2019. Once they meet the requirements, they will be authorized to export, which will help the country achieve its goals regarding growth and market participation in the world.

"The United States is a market that we have to potentiate. We are going to arrive with three containers of Hass avocado for the consumers who enjoy the Super Bowl," stated Rodolfo Ahumada, the commercial manager of Pacific Fruits International SAS.

The fruit shipped came from orchards in Quindio that are certified by the ICA, which performs strict phytosanitary surveillance of the farms.
