Tim van Haandel, Mulder Onions:

"The big question is how the market will react to imported onions"

Onions are priced high. Despite this, there is still some trade to be done. This is according to Tim van Haandel of the Dutch company, Mulder Onions.

"There are still quite a lot of inquiries for large onions. These are coming from countries such as Israel, England, and Italy. Germany is also still in the market for medium-sized onions", he says.

"Export to Africa is disappointing at the moment. Considering the current high prices, I do not see this changing. However, I hope and expect it to become somewhat busier when Germany runs out of onions and Easter Europe comes onto the market."

"All in all, the first half of the season has been challenging but not disappointing. The question for the second half is how many import onions will be coming into the market? And how will the market react to this? I expect the situation to become much clearer after the trade show in Berlin."

According to this exporter, the onion quality is not an issue. "There are, however, an increasing number of packers countrywide who are having problems with sprouting. We will just have to be alert to this", Tim concludes.
