New paper mulching films

Benedetto Accinelli from Riff98 explains that the "WeeGuardPlus biodegradable compostable paper mulching films can be used in greenhouses, nurseries and small plots."

The material was developed by Marks-3zet, a leading German producer of paper material for printing machines. In 2018, it started distributing WeedguardPlus mulching material in Italy as well. It is 100% biodegradable, as it is made entirely of cellulose, and it is resistant thanks to a specific production process.

WeedGuardPlus is already widely used in the US, where many organic and home-garden businesses already successfully employ it. The OMRI approval and Bioprefered certifications mean it can also be used on green areas of the public administration.

"The need for entirely biodegradable materials has pushed Mark 3zet to try it in Emilia Romagna. We selected a few businesses to see how Weedguard behaved on the soil and with usual mulching machines."

Laying machines must be adapted to apply the film correctly, or specific tools are needed, so this could be a future project. Anyway some businesses managed to lay the paper films mechanically with positive results.

"WG is particularly suitable for small plots, nurseries or greenhouses where films can be laid without using machines. These films are matte to guarantee weed control, porous and their color was studied to control soil temperature."
