Market Report Austria KW 04/2019:

'Stable potato market, upward trend of onions continues'

The situation on the Austrian table potato market shows hardly any changes compared to last week. On the part of the growers, after the price increase at the beginning of the year, there is a corresponding interest in outsourcing goods, even though the winter conditions are limiting actual deliveries for the time being. In any case, the cool temperatures have a favorable effect on the storage conditions. Domestic sales are largely at normal levels for the season.

The export business is still not a priority, given the limited stocks. The quality-related sorting remains unchanged. While the losses due to wireworm infestation have recently decreased slightly, the pressure point problem is steadily increasing. Producer prices are stable at the level of last week. In Lower Austria, table potatoes are usually marketed at €25 per 100 kg. For wire worm-free, small packable premium goods with the AMA quality seal up to €29 per 100 kg can be gotten. In Upper Austria, up to €27 per 100 kg were last paid.

Onions reach 50-cent mark
The upswing on the Austrian onion market continues this week. Due to the currently low temperatures, sortings were partially discontinued, but there are still goods continuously available. The export business is running very well, at prices that are noticeably above the usual levels as well.

Domestic sales are steady. Higher producer prices, however, have so far not been honored by domestic retailers, which is slowly becoming an economic problem for packers. Onion prices went up again. Onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on quality and size, usually go for between €46 and 50  per 100 kg.

Carrot market unchanged
The Lower Austrian carrot market remains in the stable position of the previous weeks. In Germany, sales are even and seasonal. There are already inquiries for exports, but the real focus on exports is still to come. Producer prices remain stable. For the coming week domestic prices for carrots in 1-kg bags should improve somewhat.
