Algeria: no cement, so the residents plant onions and potatoes

The inhabitants of Baghlia, a town in the Bourmerdès province in the north of Algeria, have had an original idea to protest against the authorities who still haven’t cemented a street of their neighborhood. They plowed the street and planted onions, garlic and potatoes for 656 feet.

The photos from this action have been widely shared on social networks and used by the media.

After 5 months of waiting for the work to start, the residents had had enough. The store owners of the street, lined with auto-repair and spare-parts shops, felt penalized by the situation. “People do not come here anymore by car because of the mud, business has gone down considerably,” deplores a local resident. “We decided to go into agriculture to make ends meet.”

The city mayor explained that the work had started on December 18th, 2018, but that it had to be interrupted because of the bad weather. But the residents’ message will not have been in vain since the work resumed on January 16th.
