The apple production volume in Shaanxi was greatly reduced in 2018 as a result of cold weather and frost damage. The price of apples reached a record height because of the reduced production volume. Consumer trends have changed in recent years. Consumer demand for premium fruit is clearly on the rise, and consumers are willing to pay for quality. The price of some domestic apples equals the price of imported apples.
Apart from the apples from Shaanxi, the apples from Gansu and Xinjiang also enjoy a strong market position. Fuji apples from Jingning in Gansu sell for 6.8 yuan [1 USD] per 0.5 kg, while other apple varieties sell for more than 8 yuan [1.18 USD] per 0.5 kg. Some exceptional, top-quality apples sell for as much as 15 yuan [2.20 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is close to the price of imported US apples at 18 yuan [2.64 USD] per 0.5 kg.
