French cauliflower: currently well-placed on the European market in terms of quality and quantity

 

The French cauliflower is currently in higher demand than usual. The same cannot be said in other European countries. In Italy and Spain, the cauliflowers are suffering from the current weather conditions. In Bari, Italy, the snow and frost made it very difficult to harvest, while in Spain, the heavy rainfalls and the cold affected the cauliflowers’ quality. But France has been very lucky so far. The weather has been favorable for the cauliflower production, yielding good quality and quantities,” explains Théo Kampschoer, co-manager of the Kampexport company which concentrates one fourth of its commercial activities on the French market.

This qualitative and quantitative difference between countries works in favor of the French cauliflower which is in steadily increasing demand. “At the moment, the demand for the French cauliflower is very high, which makes it the current leader on the European market in terms of quality and quantity,” says Théo. “But we do not know how long this is going to last or how the situation will evolve. In any case, the campaign started on a good note. The summer was dry so the plants are solid, with a lot of roots. And thanks to the current weather conditions, there are no sanitary problems. This week, we had a specific variety which was cut in three times. For 3 days, we’ve had a lot of merchandise, but as of next week, the offer will decrease because the weather is cooler and we’ve reached the end of this productive variety.”

As far as prices are concerned, they are in the average, around 1.40 to 1.60 euros per head [1.60 to 1.80 USD] delivered free to Europe, depending on the quality of the product and the distance to the importing country.
