A 500 kg shipment of premium wax apples from Chiatung Farmer's Cooperation in Pingdong, Taiwan, reached Canada by plane this week. The secretary-general of the Chiatung Farmer's Cooperation, Lin Shuling, stated that wax apples are fragile and can only be kept for a short period, which is why they can only be exported using air freight.
She further stated that the initial negotiations to begin trial exports started last year, but because of a cold current the production volume was reduced and there were no wax apples to export. The second attempt came this year. The cooperation actively selected the largest, most colorful, top-quality wax apples to spearhead this venture. An estimated 1,300 kg of Black Gold wax apples [from Hainan] is already for sale in Europe.
