Banana exports from Costa Rica to China expected to decrease this year

Costa Rica's main exports are bananas, coffee and sugar cane, however, last year, the production and export volume of bananas seriously declined as a result of climate problems. These are  expected to continue through the first half of 2019.

According to data from the local exporter, Procomer, exports in 2018 fell by 4.4% from the previous year, from $880 million in 2017 to $841 million. The current difficulties faced by banana growers include hot weather and a lack of rain and both have major impacts on the banana harvest.

In February of this year, APM International will launch a new and modern terminal and they hope to make it a convenient logistics center for export to China and other Asian countries. At present, the number of bananas exported by Costa Rica to China is very limited, mainly due to the distance and under developed logistics.
