Bergami stated, “This surely gives us some hope for the continuation of the marketing, which will go on for several months, still. This year, the Abate pear is really excellent from an organoleptic standpoint. Of course, a good preservation practice is crucial, but companies are getting increasingly better in the use of the molecule”.

Last year, there were many preservation issues, while this year only a small number of batches are not suited for marketing. Bergami pointed out, “The molecule works great on large volumes, or on a uniform stocked product. If the harvesting was carried out over a too long period of time, and some fruits are very green and others too ripe, then one can encounter many obstacles in the moment of the marketing”.

Despite this fact, the destocking is going well and Bergami is expecting to have a 10 days advantage compared to 2018. He concluded, “International markets are giving us good results with regards to Italian production and we estimate that 30% of Abate pears destined to the fresh marketing are shipped internationally”.
