A smartwatch can be used to measure sporting achievements, count your steps, just to see the time or to measure your heart rate. It was only a matter of time before someone starting using the heart rate monitor of a smartwatch on something other than a person. A Chinese user discovered not just people and animals have a heartbeat, so do coffee mugs, toilet rolls and bananas.
How is this possible? Smartwatches don’t register your heart rate by the beating in your pulse, but by the reflection of green light of certain frequencies. The heartbeat is calculated by the reflection of that light. This means all objects reflecting this light have a ‘heartbeat.’
