Polish producer of conserved vegetables look to new possibilities

"We want to offer both our production capacity and products abroad"

The Fructos company, located near Lódz in Central Poland, has been supplying canned vegetables of all kinds to the domestic and Eastern European markets for many years. Every year cucumbers, peppers, beetroot and cabbage products are flowing to both local food retailers and wholesalers. The company focuses on horseradish in processed form. Now, the company has set itself the challenge to showcase its continuous delivery capability in the remaining sales markets of Europe as well, for example in neighboring Germany, says Harald Peter, who has been active in customer service for the German-speaking countries.

Flexible capacity & private labels
Within Poland and Eastern Europe, the company and its products has long since established itself, already covering large parts of domestic food retailing. Now the company is also going abroad. "We have access to free contract cultivation in Poland and we want to offer our large production capacity abroad," says Peter. "If, for example, a German convenience manufacturer cannot keep up with production, we can offer our services immediately, in a flexible manner."

In Poland, the company's processed vegetables are for sale under the proprietary labels 'Fructos' (primarily for standard products) and 'Staropolski' (a premium brand). In the long term, the company plans to launch proprietary brands for the foreign market and for organic products. Peter: "Until then, however, we can deliver any desired packaging or private labeling, depending on the customer's specifications. We would have to be talking about 25,000 pieces minimum, which corresponds to a small daily production batch. Our main focus is being able to deliver the desired processed vegetables quickly and efficiently through our direct relationships with domestic producers."

International Producers
At the moment, the Polish vegetable producers are busy with the winter harvest, harvesting lots of cabbage and horseradish. But what would happen if the domestic yields are insufficient to meet the needs? "If someone places a larger order, we are certainly able to procure supplementary produce from domestic or foreign producers. So there are no restrictions, really," says Peter.

35 years on the market
TAT-POL sp.z o.o. is the parent company behind Fructos; it delivers its products to domestic retail chains and wholesalers, in some cases also exporting to EU countries and the Balkans. Overall, the conserved vegetables have been marketed on these respective markets since 1983 and they have won several awards. In 2000, the company won a gold medal for a lunch salad at the Polagra Food Fair. Its table horseradish was also awarded a golden award in Canada.
