Day of the German apple

"The natural apple is often an abnormality"

They are called Ingrid Marie, Privy Councilor Dr. Oldenburg and Stina Lohmann, and they are juicy, sometimes sweet, sometimes sour and definitely very healthy. Old apple varieties like these three are in vogue, even if they are not available everywhere and in every season, as was reported by the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung.

Variety in the orchards and in our fruit bowls is provided, for example, by the Central German nurseries in Reinstedt. "We produce all varieties that are used in orchards and along dirt roads, but also grow trees for orchards," says managing director Jens Traunsberger.

The company delivers its fruit trees throughout Germany
The company delivers its fruit trees throughout Germany and all of Europe as well. More than 50 varieties are on offer - from Alkmene to the White Winter Bell Apple. The tree plantings along dirt roads are one of the priorities for nurseries, reports Traunsberger. Many old trees, which have always lined such paths, are dying off: "And nothing has been replanted in the past decades," says the nursery chef.

New varieties are often taken for the new plantings, which are therefore saved from extinction. "This will preserve the genetic diversity," says Traunsberger employee Steffen Topf. And every old species that lives on can provide a basis for new breeding.
