The executive board of the Tunisian Farmers Union announced this week that the country is on the verge of a tomato shortage. The board asked that importance be given to the sector, which deserves it just as much as the milk, egg and meat industry. In 2018, the production reached 110,000 tons and the monthly consumption varies between 9,000 and 10,000 tons.
“Until January 2019, we recorded a stock of 35,000 to 40,000 tons. In this context, we will most likely have a lack of concentrated tomatoes in April, May and June 2019,” warned the representative of the Union, Midani Dhaoui.
This shortage is mainly due to the dishonest actions of land-grabbers and the poor management by the public authorities who, instead of supporting Tunisian farmers, prefer to import their milk.
