Granfrutta Zani takes stock

Italy: Optimistic expectations for Italian winter fruits

The Italian winter fruit marketing did not go as well as expected, but it will recover within a few weeks, hopefully. These are the thoughts of Raffaele Bucella, Italy marketing manager for Granfrutta Zani. He took stock of the pear, kiwi and apple situations.

Bucella stated, “I believe that the pear marketing will recover as the produce is of extremely high-quality and it preserves very well. The first part of the campaign was not brilliant for a number of reasons such as the strong competition of the Belgian and Dutch Conference pears. These countries boast high productivity per hectare, and they can reach every market thanks to their better organisation and their ability to team up”.

In terms of quantity, the Italian pear production is lower than last year. This is also the reason why Bucella is still optimistic with regard to a continuation of the marketing campaign.

This period is not that good for apples as there has been a high production throughout Europe. In this case, the Italian product faces the competition of produce coming from Poland or other emerging countries such as Croatia, which can count on lower production costs.

Bocella concluded, “I hope that the kiwi will recover in a few weeks, as well. As there will be less availability of Greek produce, the Italian produce will be the most demanded all over Europe as it is of high-quality and has no preservation-related issues. In the last few months, there was an overlap with the New Zealander produce, which partially prevented us from marketing overseas”.
