Latvia's fruit and vegetable industry experts expect an increase in the cost of fruits and vegetables. The reason for this is the spread of drought in Europe.
Inguna Gulbe, director of the Center for Agrarian Economics: "Due to the drought in Europe, prices for vegetables and fruits are on the rise, because their crop was one third less than farmers had planned. So, price increases are inevitable, perhaps by 20%."
It is well-known that in 2019, some of the products will rise in price by 5-10%. According to the head of the Association of Latvian merchants Henrik Danusevich, onion, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes will rise in price. Exotic fruits - bananas, avocados will be a bit cheaper.
All this comes after the recent growth in vegetable and fruit growing turnover in Latvia. There was an increase of more than 9% after the decrease in VAT on fruits and vegetables.
