Carrefour launches its own “Amazon Go” experiment

In the spring of 2019, Carrefour will launch a new initiative based on the principles of “Amazon Go”. The French retailer will run the experiment in France with a small fully automated store where cameras and facial recognition will be used to trace purchases and validate customer payments.

A retail store of 600 square feet, located at the Massy headquarters and reserved for Carrefour employees, will open in March. It will be equipped with cameras and sensors to track customers and identify their purchases. And for the payment, Carrefour wants to set up a concept already tested in China by its partner Tencent: a simple validation by facial recognition, instead of scanning each product at the checkout counter.
