A new Ciref experimental greenhouse should open in Douville, in the Dordogne. The project is supported under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) program led by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
Created 25 years ago, the Ciref’s main mission is to “control varietal improvement” and to develop tomorrow’s varieties of strawberries and raspberries. Up until now, 12 varieties of strawberries have been developed in the Dordogne but only three of them are really known to the consumers: Charlotte, Cirafine and Ciflorette.
In this new greenhouse, work will be done on the “early” phase in order to find a substitute for the Gariguette variety. The goal is to anticipate climate changes and their consequences. The project costs 850,300 euros [970,000 USD], half subsidized by the FEDER. In November and December 2018, the region selected 867 new cases for an amount of 44.42 million euros [50.65 million USD].
