First harvest of Luther strawberries planned in Wittenberg

'It could already be happening In July'

With tomato specialties like the Capricia, Brioso and Bellastar, within a few years Wittenberg Gemüse GmbH has made a name for itself in the German specialist trade. Since last year, many different types of peppers have been bred in their greenhouses, after which they were marketed under the Luther label. Now, there is a new step towards expansion: greenhouse strawberry production, says project manager Helmut Rehhahn in an interview with Taspo.

'Harvest season from July onward'
In the 15-hectare greenhouse, around 2,000 tons of peppers were harvested up until the winter break (mid-November). The facility receives carbon dioxide and heat via a pipeline from the neighboring Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz. For the coming year, Rehhahn plans to start a new project. From 2019 onward, in Wittenberg, "Luther strawberries" are to be harvested. It could already be happening In July, according to  the project manager.
