Total power output: 175 megawatts

BayWa sells 175 MW solar park "Don Rodrigo" to MEAG

BayWa AG's BayWa renewable energy GmbH is selling the "Don Rodrigo" solar park in southern Spain to a group client of MEAG, the asset manager of Munich Re and ERGO. A total of around 500,000 solar modules, covering an area of 265 hectares, were installed at the facility that is located 20 kilometers south of Seville. The total output of the park is 175 megawatts, which is on the order of magnitude of a conventional peak load power plant. With the 300 gigawatt hours thus generated, around 93,000 Spanish households can be supplied with electricity each year.

Largest BayWa project in the solar sector
"With the planned sale of this solar power plant in the fourth quarter of 2018, BayWa made a very important contribution to ensuring that the BayWa Group meets the overall expectations for 2018," said the Chairman of the Board of BayWa AG, Klaus Josef Lutz. Don Rodrigo is the largest project BayWa has implemented in the solar sector so far. Over the last few months, up to 10,000 solar panels have been installed on-site every day.

"What is so special about this project is that for the first time in Europe, we will generate green electricity - without any subsidies - at market prices. This will usher in a new phase of the energy transition in which solar power can be produced more cheaply than conventional electricity," explains BayWa AG's Energy Director Matthias Taft. "We view the smooth completion and rapid sale of the plant as a great success. Our goal is to ensure similar subsidy-free solar power projects in other southern European countries over the next few years and to continue driving forward the energy transition throughout Europe."

Third successful cooperation
Electricity will be provided via a 15-year PPA marketed to the Norwegian energy group Statkraft. In addition, the service team of BayWa will be responsible for the technical management. Following the sale of several solar plants in the UK to MEAG in 2014 and 2015, the sale of Don Rodrigo is already the third successful collaboration between BayWa with the asset manager of Munich Re and ERGO.
