Market Report Austria KW 1/2019:

Potato market has positive start in the new year

The Austrian potato market is optimistic about the new year. Food retail sales around Christmas time were quite satisfying this year. These are likely to continue at a good level until "Twelfth Day Kings", after which they will drop off significantly.

In view of dwindling inventories, exports are hardly an issue in the New Year either. From the supply side there is little to report. There has been no movement in producer prices recently. In Lower and Upper Austria, table potatoes are still mostly traded at € 22 per 100kg. For premium goods with the AMA quality seal up to € 29 per 100 kg can be asked.

Onion market: price increases continue
The price increases on the Austrian onion market are never ending. The decisive element for these high prices is the unchanged large demand for domestic goods. Both on the domestic market and for exports, sales figures were very pleasing. Supply can not keep up and the goods are priced accordingly.

Many farmers are already well advanced or already finished with their trading. Producer prices went up again over the last week. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, prices between € 38 and €42 per 100 kg were recorded.

Carrot market balanced out
The Lower Austrian Carrot Market started the new year well. Domestic demand is steadily rising after a satisfactory Christmas season. Quantities delivered remain manageable. Although exports are seen only to a limited extent, this is nothing unusual at this time of year. Producer prices are stable at last week's levels.
