‘Berry craze’

Fruit overtakes vegetables in UK shopping baskets

Some sources say Britain has gone "berry mad", supermarket sales figures show, as fruit has overtaken vegetables in consumers' shopping baskets. Sales data released by Asda found blueberries have seen a 53 per cent increase in sales over the past year, overtaking potatoes and broccoli as firm favourites to become the nation’s sixth and seventh-most purchased produce this year.

Staples such as bananas, grapes and clementines still sit in the nation’s top five fruit and vegetables, but raspberries and blueberries jumped eight and six places in popularity respectively.

Asda's annual list of top 10 fruit and vegetables sold is made up of seven fruits and three vegetables for 2018, compared to seven vegetables and just three fruit in 2016.

According to¸ it comes after a smoothie craze gave berries a boost sending sales past the £1bn barrier for first time, figures show, overtaking snacking fruits including apples and bananas. Millions of health-conscious Brits are now piling strawberries, blueberries and raspberries into their blenders as part of their daily routine, seeing total berry sales soar by around 20pc over the past four years.
