The launch of the Chilean cherries campaign in the Jiangnan wholesale market is one of the promotional initiatives that the Chilean Cherries Committee of ASOEX and ProChile are carrying out in the 2018-2019 campaign. The initiative also served as a framework to announce a promotional event that will be held in Shanghai on January 10, 2019, where a group of people will try to beat the Guinness World Record for the longest line of fruits in the world using cherries from Chile.
The Chilean cherry industry officially launched the season in China's wholesale markets through an action in the Jiangnan wholesale market in Guangzhou, the largest fruit market in China. The launch was made last week, and was attended by Hernan Jaramillo, the Commercial Director of Chile of the Consulate General of Chile in Guangzhou; Charif Christian Carvajal, the Marketing Director of ASOEX for Europe and Asia, and Zheng Nanshen, the General Director of the Wholesale Market of Jiangnan; as well as by important importers and buyers of the market, Chilean exporters of cherries, and members of the media.
After the official ribbon cutting, the Chilean cherry season was inaugurated in this market, followed by various attractions, including tastings and the delivery of fresh-cherry gifts to the attendees.
Chile is the biggest supplier of cherries in China, a market that is also the main destination for Chilean cherry exports, as it accounts for more than 85% of the country's export volume. "During the winter months, from November to February, most of the cherries that Chinese consumers buy are Chilean," said Hernan Jaramillo. "Lovers of this fruit in China are looking forward to the start of the Chilean cherry season. The Chilean cherry is unique thanks to their intense red color, sweet taste, and juiciness. They help make the winter months in China happier, and are an extremely popular fruit among the consumers of this nation, who give them as gifts during Christmas and the Chinese New Year," he added.
Charif Christian Carvajal, Marketing Director of ASOEX, said: "We are delighted to officially launch, on behalf of the Chilean Cherry Committee, the 2018-2019 Chilean cherry season and promotional actions in the wholesale market of Jiangnan. Jiangnan and the companies based here, as well as other wholesale fruit markets in China, are crucial partners so that our cherries can reach the tables of consumers in China."
The representative of the market of Jiangnan, Zheng Nanshen, said: "Importers operating in Jiangnan have said that the quality of the cherries that are coming from Chile this season is particularly high, consistent, and that they have a very good size. The cherry is the most important imported fruit in Jiangnan, and we believe that the 2018-2019 season will be one of the best seasons for Chilean cherries."
While the cherries that arrived in China during November and the beginning of December did so by air transport, today shipments are arriving by sea, beginning with the first arrival on December 14, when 100 containers of Chilean cherries arrived to China. The majority of this volume was sent to the market of Jiangnan, the largest selling point for imported fruit in China, from where they were distributed to greengrocers, supermarket chains, e-commerce companies, and other secondary wholesale markets throughout China.
Thousands of containers of Chilean cherries will arrive in China this season, and the volume will peak in January, before the Spring Festival. Much of this volume will come by special boats, which are faster and travel directly from Valparaiso, Chile, to China in just over 20 days.
Carvajal added that Xiao Zhi and Xiao Li, the two mascots of Chilean Cherries, reinforced the campaign's slogan: "Enjoy your red moment." He also said that the campaign had the support of ProChile, the Embassy of Chile in China, and the consulates of Chile in that country, and that it was organized by the Chilean Cherry Committee of ASOEX, whose members were actively participating in each activity.
