China: Slow market for pomelos

Recently, the weather in Shanghai has been dry and cold which is usually great for pomelo sales. But this year the situation is different. According to reports from the Central Broadcasting Network, this year, the price has dropped sharply, and some areas have even cut prices by more than 60%.

In some areas the fruit has been kept too long in stock and some areas have slow sales and many merchants have had to lower their prices. Why? Well, firstly, the market supply is greater than the demand. Normally by this time people buy 3 or 4 pomelos at once while this year it is not the case.

Secondly, quality has been poor in many cases and the taste is not as good as last year. Whether it is a supermarket or a fruit shop, the stock is ordered according to the demand of previous years, but the sales volume has only reached 70% of last year. Before New Year's Day and the Spring Festival, there may be a new round of discount promotions, which could lower prices further.

Some insiders believe that prices actually started to decline last year, but this year's decline is the largest and fastest. The performance of pomelo in the later period is still not optimistic, but the space for price decline is not large.
