China: Vegetable prices in Shouguang show upward trend

The prices of vegetables in Shouguang, Shandong, showed an overall upward trend last week. Some vegetable prices increased by as much as 50%. The main reasons for this development are as follows:

1. Some of the local vegetable supply was already approaching its end last week. The overall volume of vegetables on the market diminished. Vegetable supply from other areas did not arrive in time, so that there was a temporary supply shortage. The price naturally went up.

2. Year-round traders at Shouguang explain that the main vegetable supply to Shouguang market comes from glass houses. The overcast and rainy weather recently reduced the number of sun hours, which reduced the speed of vegetable growth. This further delayed market supply, which then caused the price to increase.

It is estimated that temperatures will slightly rise in another week, and the price of vegetables in Shouguang may come down again.
