Nuchi Sansekan Health Clinic opens fueled by Fair Trade premium funds

Long before the world caught on, Covilli Brand Organics said it was growing food free of pesticides, chemicals, additives and genetic modification. They said they did it because it was the right thing to do. Fair-trade is also the right thing to do, according to the company. In its most simple definition the focus of fair-trade is the farm worker, not the product.

Covilli is currently celebrating the official inauguration of Clinica Nuchi Sansekan in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico on January 12th, 2019. The clinic is located about one kilometer from Covilli’s farm; Agricola Ciari and half a kilometer from the farm workers housing.

Covilli’s association of farm workers named their organization Nuchi Sansekan which means “All Together” in the native Nàtuahl language, which speaks volumes for the farm workers understanding of the fair-trade concept. The clinic took on the same name and objective.

The mission is to deliver high-quality health care services at a low cost to farm workers, their families and the surrounding communities. The vision is to create a place where each member of the community will feel like they are receiving the finest health care possible.

The clinic officially opened its doors last month and is currently reporting an average of 40-45 appointments per day with a future objective of 90. Total served will be between 7,000 and 10,000 farm workers and community members from the surrounding area, many of which are migratory, indigenous, poor and marginalized.

In 2014 Covilli Brand Organics and Agricola Ciari achieved Fairtrade Certified™ certification on all farming operations in Guaymas, Sonora Mexico. Making Covilli the first (and only) completely organic and fair-trade grower / shipper / marketer in the USA and Canada.

In the company’s first three years of Fair Trade certification, they have received over $800 thousand dollars in Fair Trade Premium Funds and have completed four significant community projects. The clinic is the first major Fair-trade Community Project completed with more to come on the vision board.
