China: “White yams in short supply for many years”

"Compared to other crops, white yams take a greater toll on the planting environment, especially the soil. It must be white earth and the same land cannot be planted more than twice. After harvesting, it will take 5 to 6 years before it can be planted again. The production cost is higher. Therefore, the annual production of white yam is relatively stable nationwide, and this year that is also the case.” Yao Aihua of Chenglin Fruit Professional Cooperative said in an interview with Freshplaza.

"White yams can be eaten all year round, so it is not so seasonal. It grows vertically and generally you must dig 1 meter below the ground to dig out the white yam. Because of its scarcity, the domestic white yam market has always been in short supply. Consumers mostly buy white yam for desserts, salads, etc."

“Our yams are from Xinji City, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, one of the main producing areas of Chinese yams. The main product is white yam. The products are mainly sold to the wholesale markets of first- and second-tier cities in China. Thanks to the limited production and use of white yam, in recent years, the demand in the domestic market has increased year by year. I am very optimistic about the future market prospects."
