Congo: Kiwi for 14 euros/kg

In Western countries, there is the widespread idea that all Africa is a poor continent, plagued by economic problems. In fact, many capital cities are very similar to European ones, populated by both rich and poor people. The economist Gianluca Bagnara showed the photo he took in Kinshasa, the capital of the Republic of Congo.

Kiwi sold for 28.050 Congolese francs which are equal to 14 euros/kg

Bagnara explains, “I was there because of job reasons – as I supervise agri-food development projects. In the supermarkets, I saw oranges sold for 12 euros/kg and kiwis for 14 euros/kg. Most of them were imported from South Africa”.

According to Bagnara, this says a lot: Italy must sign commercial agreements with these African countries as they are full of rich people looking for quality products. And, of course, they will buy Italian fruit hands down.
