Marcel van Lith, The Greenery:

"Red currants in demand around the holidays"

Traditionally, a lot of red currants are sold around the Christmas holidays. It appears that this season, the demand for these berries will be high again around the holidays. In the past, it was mainly the catering industry that bought a lot of red currants to use as garnishing. Now, this fruit is also available in supermarkets for a large part of the year. The increasing popularity of soft fruit is reflected in the sales of red currants.

The hot weather meant red currants were harvested early this season. This made for a long sales season. The beautiful summer has ensured that the taste and quality of the berries are great this year. Since the harvest, sales have also been good. These berries make their way throughout Europe.

Red currants are only cultivated in a few places on earth. No other country stores these berries as well as the Netherlands. "We have top quality red currants available year round. This makes a product like red currants unique as well as exclusive", explains Marcel van Lith of the Dutch company, The Greenery.

At The Greenery, the majority of the red currants are stored and sorted centrally at Zachtfruit Schalkwijk. “This centralization means we can make use of the most advanced storage facilities. We can also stay up-to-date. Investing in one place is always more efficient than doing so in multiple places. By sorting centrally, we can be flexible in our response to the fluctuations in the market. We must be able to react quickly if needed or slow things down when there is little demand", says Marcel.
