A group of producers from the region of Baru filed a criminal complaint against President Juan Carlos Varela before the General Secretariat of the National Assembly for the alleged violation of human rights and criminal code norms.
Marvin Wilcox, one of the affected producers, said the producers were being evicted from their lands by means of an unlicensed contract with which the government intends to give the Banapiñas SA company a large number of hectares, including the lands they have occupied since 1998.
Ada Pinzon said there might be some corrupt public officials in this case. She stated this, due to the strong measures taken to make the eviction effective.
Ines Guilen said there were irregularities in the twenty-year concession that the National Government granted Banapiñas through a contract-law that allowed them to start producing bananas in the first 650 hectares since last June.
A group of advisers from the National Strategic Alliance requested the contract signed between the Panamanian State and Banapiña, a subsidiary of the transnational Del Monte, which allows the exploitation of a banana concession in the province of Chiriqui, be reconsidered.
