Market supply unable to meet demand

China: Wei orange becomes "dark horse" of citrus market

The Wei orange is produced in "China's hometown of late-season oranges"--Meishan Prefecture in Sichuan. The orange variety was established by the overseas Chinese researcher, Dr. Wei Gang, who returned from England. This late-season variety is a new variation introduced from Japan and it began to flourish after years of experimentation. The orange is currently cultivated in Meishan and neighboring areas in small volumes. It is currently one of the most expensive oranges on the market. The current production season officially began in early November and is estimated to continue until January, 2019.

"The production volume of Number 1 Wei oranges is not very large, around 100-150 thousand kg. Market demand greatly exceeds our supply. Our Shiranui oranges and loquats gradually enter the market, following the Number 1 Wei orange. We take advantage of our precise position in the market and our strict control over product quality to steadily advance our sales." This is according to Mr. Wei Gang of Dingde Huaxia Agricultural Technology Group.

"At this stage, we mainly sell our oranges gift wrapped through traditional marketing channels in hotels and supermarkets in first tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. We drop all the second-grade fruit that does not meet our requirements to avoid their entry in the market. We do this in order to guarantee excellent product quality and extend and consolidate market share."

"We own 213 hectares of Wei orange orchards in Meishan, Sichuan, and also supplement our production in cooperation with local farmers who own an overall 1,333 hectares of orange orchards. We have been through many years of research and development, and we have established an integrated manufacturing process that begins with plantation and includes cultivation of product varieties, use of pesticides, construction of installations, and harvest. We guarantee food safety from the production area to the consumer's table. We are currently working hard to improve brand recognition, and provide consumers with a better understanding of our products."
