Price drops

China: Pomelo market loses balance between demand and supply

The pomelo price showed a downward trend in the market this week. The main reasons for this development are as follows: first, the pomelo market lost a balance between demand and supply. Data from Wanbang Market shows that around 450 thousand kg of pomelo enter the market every day this week, but the sales volume is only 300 thousand kg per day. Production areas have not even collected half the harvest. The pressure on sales in production areas is high and the purchase price therefore drops, which in turn lowers retail prices.

Second, other fruit varieties enter the market around the same time and provide fierce competition for pomelos. Oranges from Yunan and Jiangxi entered the market this week. The variety of fruit in the market gradually increases, which puts pressure on the price of individual fruit varieties. The overall market price dropped by around 0.7 yuan [0.10 USD] per kg.
