Asparagus grower Werner is a staunch user of the ‘asparagus spider‘ for harvesting white asparagus. This year, the company acquired the 10,000th machine built by Engels Innovatietechniek BV. The proceeds from this asparagus spider were donated to the German Juvenile Cancer Foundation, at the ExpoSE trade fair. This foundation supports children and their families with advice and information, but also uses donations for research to give children a chance to get well again. "We are proud of this new milestone in our company and it is an honor to be able to support the good cause," said the company's management.

The German Werner family grows berry fruits and asparagus in the rural Deinste area. The philosophy of the Werner family is to produce tasty and healthy food in harmony with man and nature. It also generates renewable energy to ensure the future of the next generations. Even the asparagus harvest is powered by renewable energy. The 150-acre asparagus fields are harvested entirely using asparagus spiders, whose batteries are charged with electricity from solar energy.

Low harvest costs
A harvester reaps an average of 30 kilograms of asparagus per hour, which, combined with the efficient harvesting system, reduces labor costs to just 40 eurocents per kilogram of asparagus. The comparatively low harvest costs and the possibility to use foil management were key for the Werner company's decision to only harvest with asparagus spiders.
During the Karlsruhe asparagus and strawberry fair ExpoSE, the leading fair in the field of asparagus and berry fruit cultivation, the 10,000th asparagus spider was officially handed over to the Werner company. Subsequently, the official donation check was handed over to the German Juvenile Cancer Foundation.

Engels Innovatietechniek used the opportunity to present their optimized asparagus spider. Among other things, the foil layer -an essential part of the machine for laying down the foil- has been completely redesigned. The new design makes the asparagus spider considerably more stable, making foil management even easier. Another development is the pivoting rear axle of the asparagus spider A1+. The basic construction is a concept that has been well-proven. However, turning the foil feeder results in a very small turning circle. Through their so-called 'kink control', the machine pulls itself through the curve. This way, maneuvering becomes faster and easier.
Completely new was the ASVerde, a harvesting aid for the harvest of green asparagus. In contrast to the ASGreen, which has electronic controls, the ASVerde is equipped with a mechanical controls. Thanks to the mechanical control, users get a better response from the machine responds and it becomes very easy to operate.
