Uruguay's new Yvyra apple takes its first steps in the region

Grupo Viveros del Uruguay (GVU) is preparing the next step in the international development of its new Yvyra apple variety. "We have finalized the introduction of genetic material in Brazil, where we plan to have fruits that were produced locally in the 2019/2020 season. Now we are inviting people to a day of dissemination amidst the harvest, on January 29, 2019, in a property near Montevideo. We are making this invitation in advance so that the parties from other countries that are interested in attending the event can be there and taste it," said Roberto Zeballos, one of the engineers responsible for the project.

"Earlier this year we published an article that explains that this variety has a low cold winter requirements (300 units of cold according to the Richardson method). "It is a rustic, vigorous plant that is moderately tolerant to Venturia, is very productive, and that has a good capacity to be stored in cold storage. This new apple has an intense red color and matures 30 days before its progenitor, the Red Delicious, of which it maintains its main characteristics."

"In Uruguay, there are already plantations of this new variety, as usual, because there are some producers that are very innovative, restless, and show the way to the rest. Brazil has been our first objective abroad, but our intention is to take it to other countries that are looking for a variety that is similar to the Red Delicious variety and that has low cold requirements," concluded Roberto Zeballos.
