Mexico wants to increase vegetable exports to China

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) held a working meeting with entrepreneurs from the People's Republic of China and vegetable producers in the country, with the purpose of promoting investments in the cultivation, processing, and packaging of vegetables for export to the markets of Canada, the United States, and China.

In a statement, Sagarpa said that the goal of the first stage was to expand the cultivation of okra, a vegetable that has a high nutritional value and a high consumption among the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean people that reside in North America, as well as to diversify the sowing of broccoli, carrots, yellow, purple and white onion, habanero, serrano, and jalapeno peppers, among others.

At the meeting, which was held at the facilities of the federal agency, the parties agreed to start working to evaluate the northern region of the state of Tamaulipas, which is the main producer of okra at a national level with an area of ​​five thousand hectares and a potential of more than 36 million tons per year, in two, or perhaps three cycles.

The producers, businessmen, and authorities agreed to implement a work agenda to initiate the technical recognition and evaluation visits in view of future investment aimed at promoting the cultivation of vegetables and infrastructure for the processing and packaging of products to export them to North America and Asia.
