China: Pomelo price drops by over 60%

Pomelos occupy an important position in the market now that we are entering the dry winter season, because this delicious fruit helps to reduce internal heat. The price of pomelos is especially low this year. The price dropped by more than 60% in comparison with the same period last year.

Data from the Wanbang Agricultural Market in Henan for the period between November 2nd and November 9th shows that the average price of white pomelo was 2 yuan [0.28 USD] per kg, which is a price decrease of 23.08% in comparison with the previous week and a price decrease of 62.26% in comparison with last month. The average price of red pomelo is 3.4 yuan [0.49 USD] per kg, which is a price decrease of 22.73% in comparison with the previous week, and a price decrease of 46.03% in comparison with last month.

Why are pomelos so cheap this year? The supply volume from production areas is abundant and the demand is weak. Excessive supply puts pressure on the price; in some areas the fruit has already become unmarketable. Many traders have no choice but to lower their prices. In addition, the product quality of some pomelo varieties is not as good as it was last year. All these conditions create a situation where supply is abundant, but few people are interested in buying.
