Giovanni Selvaggi is the president of the Consorzio di Tutela dell’Arancia Rossa Igp. The company is officially starting the 2018/2019 citrus fruit campaign, “For this campaign, we are marketing a produce the organoleptic characteristics of which are widely acknowledged by the retailers, the MMRs and the customers. Further, the produce is middle-big sized, which is ideal for marketing it both in Italy and abroad”.
Good news regarding the Tarocco, the Moro and the Sanguinello varieties
“The producers achieved this quality thanks to the extreme care they provided which resulted in smaller volumes – caused by the bad climate – but they are of incredible quality”.
The president of the Consorzio Arancia Rossa Igp sends a clear and reassuring message to Italian and foreign buyers, “The unprecedented bad weather we experienced affected the fruits only marginally. However, the plants received the most damages – especially the newer ones. In any case, if we will get the promised support for the fight against plant diseases, then we will reduce the production-related issues even for the years to come”.
Currently, the company markets 17.000 tons of citrus fruit, both on the Italian and foreign markets. Also for this campaign in Italy, most of the produce will go to the MMR channels and then to greengrocers, retailers and small businesses”.
A lot of scams to be aware of
Selvaggi, “The red-orange is a unique produce and it must be preserved from scams and counterfeits. It is not the case that in the world of quality restaurants the consumption of our produce has increased by 10%. The food service sector has been extremely helpful in promoting our red-oranges – other than in moving increasing quantities. That is why we are planning co-marketing initiatives together with renowned Italian and international chefs in order to promote our produce”.
Selvaggi, “There is a shortage of small-sized produce in this campaign. Usually, the processing industry buys this kind of produce, because of the lower price and because of market and law-related reasons. Therefore, they do not promote the uniqueness of our oranges. With regard to this, we hope that the Government will launch a law that will guarantee the traceability of the citrus fruit used for juices. In this way, it is possible to promote the red oranges which have unique nutritional characteristics – as it is widely known.
The president, “The campaign just started can be an example of what the productive standard for the red-orange should be. That is, big sized fruits that can promote Sicily all around the world. This is why we are working on a communication campaign that will introduce more customers to our produce thus allowing them to appreciate our oranges”.
