Last week, the first Berkane clementines arrived from Morocco at Dutch fruit wholesaler, Wilko Fruit. "The temperature in Berkane is perfect. During the day, it is about 20 degrees, and at night it is around ten degrees", says Wilko van der Zwaard.
"These temperatures are good for the clementines' color and high sugar content. Consumers, therefore, want to eat this fruit right away", he says. "There is a good harvest of clementines this year compared to other years. The sizes are just a little smaller."
Wilko Fruit is offering the Berkane clementines under the Berkane D’Or label (Berkane's gold). "The Zniber Station has set up a brand new packing line in Berkane. Here they work with 100% own production. They have the latest machines to guarantee this fruit's sweet quality", says Wilko. Wilko Fruit is the distributor for the Netherlands.
In addition to the Berkane clementines, the first containers with clementines from the Souss and Gharb regions arrived today. The clementines are being marketed under the Gaudias label. Wilko Fruit also offers the 'Le Griffe du President' and 'Sofia-Sud' varieties. They offer these beside the Gaudias.
The Moroccan citrus season will be followed up with the Navelina Newhall. This is set to take place in the first week of December. At the end of December, the juicing clementine, the Salustiana, will be available.
