Lush harvest but precarious economic situation for domestic producers

Austrian fruit farmers fight against 'unfair' price ratios

Austrian fruit growers are currently addressing the public with one of their concerns. Although the 2018 yields were good in terms of weather and numbers, the economic situation of many growers is precarious.

The local fruit growers are point out the situation with large boxes and banners. "Stop the unfair prices for our growers" read the posters. Economically, the farmers do not have much hope, if the industry and consumers do not come around.

Transparency and economy
"The fruit growers have been doing their homework for many years, keeping quality controls, ensuring transparency and striving for profitability - but the revenue situation is far from sufficient to sustain operations," explains Wolfgang Mazelle, Managing Director of the Association of Styrian Buisness Farmers. He supports the growers in their request for fairness and rethinking.
