Chips and potato products very much in demand

Possibilities for processed potatoes are growing steadily

Not just for the domestic market, but for export purposes as well, more and more potato products are produced in Germany every year. Simply because they are gaining popularity with consumers. In marketing year 2017/18, potato processors made extensive use of available raw materials and produced more consumption food stuffs.

Production growth
It was relatively lively in the second quarter of this year; mainly the months April to June. This is evident from the preliminary data recently published by the Federal Statistical Office. If the respective products are back-calculated using standard factors of raw material tonnage, the use of raw materials totaled almost one million tonnes in the second quarter of 2018, bringing the annual result to a record of 3.73 million tonnes.

The production of French fries and other frozen products has been relatively stable over the last four years, having grown steadily for many years. In marketing year 2017/18, the production of frozen potatoes was 560,000 tonnes. There has also been a growth in production of chilled products such as dumplings, fried potatoes, gnocchi, potato dumplings, potato salads and French fries for a few years now. Of these, at least 329,000 tonnes were produced in the 2017/18 marketing year.

Chip potatoes
A perennial favorite for growth are potato chips. Production increased by more than 10,000 tonnes compared to the 2016/17 marketing year, reaching a peak of 133,000 tonnes.
