Spain: GAC acquires German salad producer Thurländer

Grupo Alimentario Citrus (GAC), expert in the elaboration of fresh and healthy products, has acquired the German company Thurländer, specialized in the production of ready-to-eat salads; one of the Spanish group's key business areas. With this operation, GAC takes a step further in its strategic plan to achieve growth in new markets through new channels and attract new customers.

"Germany is a market with a great potential for growth in the healthy food sector," said GAC general manager Rafael Boix. "This operation is an extraordinary milestone for us that makes us more competitive and strengthens our position to continue growing in a sustainable manner."

Thurländer Salate und Feinkost GmbH was founded in 1999 and has a processing plant for ready-to-eat salads in the German town of Thurland, in the Saxony-Anhalt region. It currently employs 300 people and in 2017 it reached a turnover of 45 million Euro (+5%). GAC has promised to protect the jobs of the current workforce and will continue to ship its production from Thurland to the German, Danish and Austrian markets, supplying the country's main distribution chains.

The company markets more than 50 products and is a leader in the salads in a bowl segment. At an operational level, the merger with the German company will provide GAC with significant growth in the fields of innovation, efficiency and resources. Boix highlighted that "Thurländer has a solid structure at both operational and distribution levels. We are combining our experience to continue offering our customers and consumers the best range of fresh, healthy, practical products of the highest quality, adapted to each market."

Germany has been a priority market for GAC since the launch of its internationalization strategy in 2015, in the areas of agricultural business and child nutrition. Now, the company adds new markets for the expansion of its range of fresh ready-to-eat products.
