China: Tomato prices rising rapidly

Data provided by analysts from Nanjing Zhongcai Distribution and Wholesale Market shows that the wholesale price of tomatoes is currently 6.2 yuan [0.89 USD] per kg, which is a price increase of more than 50% in comparison with the 4 yuan [0.58 USD] per kg around the same time in the previous year. The reason for this development is the transition of major tomato supplies from production areas in northeast China, such as Liaoning, to production areas in Shandong. Supply from Shouguang and other production areas in Shandong, however, suffered from natural disasters this year. This influenced the vegetable supply volume, which in turn caused the price of tomatoes to increase.
