Nico Spruijt, Yex:

"It is time for the avocado market to pick up again"

The avocado market has been very quiet in recent weeks. "Now, the last of the Peruvian and South African avocados are on their way out. The market will begin to pick up again. Traditionally, the Chilean avocados are always more expensive," says Nico Spruijt of Dutch produce wholesaler, Yex. Hard avocado prices are at the EUR8 or 9 mark.

Nico is pleased that the market is showing an upward trend again. "The situation on the avocado market is kind of new again. This, after how good the market was for a long time, following the avocado craze. Sales have, in my opinion, been difficult for too long. You notice that the market is currently still somewhat hesitant to send large volumes overseas", he says.

In the coming weeks, the focus will be on Chilean avocados at Yex. These will be supplemented by products from Columbia, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. "With December coming up, the demand will take off again. We are then also expecting better prices again", concludes Nico.
