End of greenhouse production season in sight

Right now, the final batches of greenhouse products are arriving on the market. After a hot summer filled with quality problems, fewer problems were seen in recent weeks, and the greenhouse products have been of considerably better quality, according to Frits van der Meulen of the KCB (Kwaliteits Controle Bureau) in this column.

Tomatoes aren’t causing a lot of problems now. Some batches might be of slightly poorer quality, but some productions are nearing their end now, or they’ve already been cleared, such as the illuminated production. Quality is good in general, and the product looks well.

The quality of bell pepper has also improved significantly, and hardly any quality problems can now be found. During our inspections, we come across good-looking, firm and shiny vegetables. The poorer quality and rejections we do meet, are mostly found in the Spanish product. Quite a few of those batches fall short, and this is mostly due to tainted stems.

Aubergines are of a good quality level in general. Cucumbers are also of good quality. The differences in production methods can be seen in the quality of the product. Because some growers grow their product differently than others, differences in quality can be seen.

Finally, outdoor iceberg lettuce. This product was also affected by the dry and warm weather. There’s currently still product from Dutch soil, and quality is generally good. If we are to believe the stories, iceberg lettuce was quickly done growing, and the quantity is now rapidly decreasing.
